Sunway University College was formed with the belief and understanding that higher education is vital to the progress of the Nation. The predecessor institution, known as Sunway College then, received an auspicious start in 1987 when it was officially opened by the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah Alhaj Sultan of Selangor Darul Ehsan. Within a short span of time. its student numbers outgrew the original premises, eventually leading to the opening of the new purpose-built campus.

Occupying 22 acres of prime land in Bandar Sunway Petaling Jaya, the RM 120 million campus, fully equipped with academic, hostel and sports facilities is among the largest and most modern private institutions in Malaysia.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 9, 1991 and in December 1992, the institution moved to its new campus, complete with a comprehensive range of modern academic and residential facilities. By January 1993, all academic sessions were conducted here, The grandest moment in the history of Sunway University College came on April 29, 1993 when the new campus was officially opened by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the 4th Prime Minister of Malaysia. It represents a major investment by the Sunway Group towards education.

That moment declared the aspirations of Sunway University College to become a world-class institution and a leader in private education in Malaysia and the ASEAN region, in line with the Prime Minister's vision that Malaysia should become a centre for academic excellence.

Sunway University College has built a fine reputation and proud tradition of excellence and leadership. Yet never to rest on its laurels, the institution continues in its progress towards excellence. The institution's Founder and Chairman of the Sunway Group, Ybhg Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr. Jeffery Cheah has placed Sunway University College into a Trust in 1997, under the eminent chairmanship of YABhg Tun Omar Ong Yoke Lin. This auspicious occasion was witnessed by YB Dato' Seri Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak. the Minister of Education then. Such is the commitment of Sunway University College, Malaysia's Premier Private University College.

Sunway University College was conferred University College status by the Ministry of Higher Education on 12 August 2004. The approval letter was presented by the Higher Education Minister at that time, YB Dato' Dr Shafie bin Haji Mohd Salleh to YBhg Tan Sri Dato' Seri (Dr) Jeffrey Cheah, the Foundation Chancellor of Sunway University College, during the launch of the National Patriotic Day celebrations at Sunway University College.

Tan Sri Dato' Seri (Dr) Jeffrey Cheah Fook Ling was officially installed as the University's Foundation Chancellor on 19 September 2006 in the presence of His Royal Highness Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharofuddin Idris Shah AlHaj.

In 2006, Sunway University College established a memorandum of agreement to offer Joint Honours Degrees with Lancaster University, UK, The MoA is an academic collaboration between the two which enables students to get a British honours accreditation while attending courses at Sunway Being a Sunway- Lancaster joint degree holder, students are ensured easy access into the job market or to further their studies in other institutions worldwide. Lancaster University, UK is currently ranked No. 21 among the UK universities based on The Times Good University Guide 2007, Programmes offered under this partnership are Business Management, Business Studies, Information Technology, Information Systems, Multimedia Systems, International Hospitality Management, International Tourism Management and Psychology.

Academic Facilities

The RM120 million University College campus is fully equipped with first-class academic, hostel and sporting facilities. It is among the largest and most modern private institution in Malaysia. The two academic blocks can accommodate 9,000 students and include special features for the handicapped.

Facilities as below:

• More than 120 classrooms.

• 15 lecture halls with seating arrangements designed to provide maximum elbow room for students' comfort. The acoustically balanced lecture theatres can take in up to 300 students at a time.

• The multi-purpose hall can accommodate over 1,200 students for examinations and other special occasions.

• Well-equipped computer and multimedia laboratories

• Black box theatre for performances

• A language laboratory complete with computerized learning console

• The Sunway University College School of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management also has training facilities including three different culinary labs for production, preparation and pastry, a mock-up housekeeping suite, a five-star training restaurant, a delicatessen and a fully functional travel bureau

• The ISO 9001:2000 certified Tun Hussein Onn Library occupies 58,000 sq ft of floor space which encompasses reading rooms, book stacks and specialist function areas such as the Audio Visual Room and the Multimedia Resource Centre.

• A fully-equipped Multimedia Production Laboratory to support multimedia courses. In the Library, the Multimedia Resource Centre houses another 138 computers for students' course assignment work and internet access.

• There is complete wireless access coverage (wifi) for the main campus compound. Wifi internet access is available 24x7 throughout the university building that covers classrooms, lecture halls, cafeteria, library, concourse and open areas that are conducive for student discussions, communications, eLearning and working on course assignments.
